ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

Each month the Booster Club honors two senior student athletes of the month for their outstanding athletic, academic and community achievements. Athletes are nominated by their coaches and voted by Booster Club members. At the end of the year, two honorees are selected for a $250 award each. Please congratulate our winners when you see them!

 

2011-2012 Senior Student Athletes of the Month

OCTOBER

Ethan Coffey, Football – GPA 3.21

Ethan has played MHS football for four years and has lettered each year. He made the football All-WesCo Honorable Mention team in his junior year, and lead his team in the number of sacks his senior year. Some of his fondest memories include the time he made four sacks playing Oak Harbor in his junior year, and five tackles when the team won against Woodway and Glacier Peak his senior year. Ethan has taken six AP classes including AP Calculus and AP Stats. He is a member of MHS InterHigh (a group similar to inter-school ASB) and a former volunteer umpire for Pacific Little League. For his senior project, he is planning on coaching youth basketball with Mr. Warner. Ethan is currently employed as a courtesy clerk for QFC. He plans to get an undergraduate degree and then law school. His top three choices for college are Creighton, University of San Francisco and Seattle University. Depending on schoolwork and availability of a team, he would like to continue playing baseball or football at the college level. Coach Mark Stewart says:  "Ethan brings a great work ethic to the field, is a hard worker, and leads by example. As a teammate, Ethan is supportive and positive with others, and on the field he has made big play after big play. He is a great competitor. In the classroom, he brings humor and hard work together. Ethan is a great model for the student athlete."

 

Sarah Hamburg, Cheer – GPA 3.70
Sarah is a first-year cheerleader. She also played doubles for two years in MHS Varsity tennis and one year JV, receiving the “Most Improved” player award. She was also a Captain of the freshman volleyball team and was awarded the “Most Improved” player there as well. Sarah is on LINK Crew, National Honor Society and Yearbook. She is currently taking AP and Honors classes. She's been the Edmonds Rotary Student of the Month and a Presidential Service Award winner. As an active member of her church and youth group, Sarah serves on the Intern Committee and Student Leadership Team and served on a mission trip. Sarah regularly volunteers at Neighbors in Need, a local nonprofit working with at-risk kids, and volunteers during fundraising events for Children’s Hospital and Tree House Foundation. Sarah is also on Nordstrom's Fashion Board. She plans on attending a four-year university, majoring in health sciences and going to dental school to become a dental hygienist. Sarah's school activities Yearbook (Student Life Editor), National Honor Society, Leo Club and Treble Choir.

 

SEPTEMBER

Tanner Davenport, Football – GPA 3.65
Tanner has played football since his freshman year and is also an excellent musician and active in choir. Tanner has been on LINK for two years and active with ASB activities four years. His presence and willingness to help has led Tanner to a seat on the ASB executive board where he is Activities Coordinator. Tanner is focusing on the opportunity to attend a four-year university where he can continue his football career. He is currently looking at the Air Force Academy. Coach Stewart says, "Tanner is tackle on the offensive line where he plays his heart out. Tanner is much appreciated for being a leader on and off the field. His hard work is also noted for his representation with ASB."

 

Payton Shrum, Volleyball – GPA 3.809
Payton is a four-year varsity volleyball player, co-captain and competes in sprints for track. She says that sports have always been a big part of her life and being able to represent Meadowdale is an honor. She's in National Honor Society, LINK, and takes numerous AP classes. Payton is also editor-in-chief for the yearbook and plays on a club volleyball team. In the summer of 2010 she went on a mission trip to the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. Payton is helping with a fundraiser for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the volleyball team's annual "Dig For A Cure" match against Lynnwood High School. She's considering small, four-year colleges on the West Coast. She's interested in graphic design and playing volleyball in college. Her coach says, "Payton is a starter and touches the ball more than anyone. Being a setter and captain, she has a lot of leadership responsibility and handles it all very well. Payton is averaging 25 assists per match. Her serving percentage is 100%."

 

AUGUST

Marie Landsverk, Cheer – GPA 3.46
Marie is captain of the varsity cheer squad and has been on cheer since her sophomore year. She's a member of the swim team and is active in student government and yearbook. As a member of National Honor Society, Marie has excelled in AP and Honors classes. Marie was also an ambassador for the People to People program, traveling in Europe and representing her school and community in the best possible way.

Quinn Massey, Cross Country - GPA 3.50
Quinn is a cross country captain and has been a varsity runner since his freshman year. He likes cross country team-bonding activities like spaghetti dinners, the summer retreat and going to big meets like Seaside. He says that best part about running is the places you can go and the people you get to meet who share the love of running. Quinn is in Leo Club and volunteers at the Lynnwood Food Bank. He's also a sports reporter for the Maverick newspaper and is on the LINK crew. On the weekends, you can find him working at Cafe de Paris in downtown Edmonds as a host/busser. He just finished his senior project event by coordinating the Kids' 1K Street Strut for the Edmonds Public Schools Foundation. He plans on applying to Western, Gonzaga, Washington State, Montana State, University of Oregon and Central Washington University.


2010-2011 Senior Student Athletes of the Month

February 2011

Maddi  Null, Girls Soccer, GPA  3.65
Maddi is considered by her teammates and coach to be an all-around great athlete and team player. Her coach also says that she is very coachable, motivated and dedicated to her sport. Maddi loves her soccer team
and thinks of it as a family unit in competition. Maddi is reporting more than 280 hours of community service this year, mostly earned as a junior counselor for summer camps. When not babysitting, Maddi can occasionally be found working at the family owned Wooden Spoon kitchen store in Edmonds. Maddi feels that her involvement in sports has improved her leadership skills and instilled a strong sense of MHS pride that will last forever. Her future plans include attending Humboldt State University in Northern California where she will continue her soccer career.

Tyce Tallman, Boys Basketball, GPA 2.0
Tyce has done a great job of leading the team on a five-game winning streak. He has played well on the basketball court, scoring 24 points against Shorecrest and 20 against Marysville-Pilchuck. As a leader on the court, his positive attitude and hard work ethic inspires his teammates. Tyce
believes that sports have helped shape his future by providing a structure and focus that helps with making good choices. Tyce has been a dedicated basketball athlete at MHS, devoting his off-court time to kids camps and working with JV and freshman players. Tyce is also an active participant in his church’s charity work. This fall Tyce hopes to play basketball for Warner Pacific in Portland, Oregon.

 

January 2011

Lindsay Hatch, Basketball, 3.508 GPA
This National Honor Society senior feels that sports is an integral part of being involved in high school, staying fit and meeting great friends. Lindsay is a guard for the basketball team and she also runs track for MHS. When not on the court, she is involved in Honors classes, Key Club and Link Crew. Off campus, she works for SnoKing as a referee and a tutor twice a week.  Lindsay is in the final stages of choosing between WSU and Linfield in Oregon. Coach Troy Parker says, "She is a terrific vocal team leader who consistently puts her team's interests first. She plays hard each day whether it is practice or a game.  She is also a first-rate student and citizen here at Meadowdale and a worthy recipient of this award."

Sean Hennessy, Basketball, 2.789 GPA
As a starting forward on the varsity basketball team, Sean is full of energy on the court and a key team player.  Off the court, Sean plays soccer for MHS, is a member of the German Club and represented MHS in Berlin, Munich and Kassel Germany, along with 24 others in the German American Academic Program his junior year. Sean believes that MHS sports are the key to being positively engaged after school ends for the day. Sean also keeps up with his community service work as a volunteer coach at Alderwood Boys and Girls Basketball Program. Sean plans on earning an AA in community college and then transferring to a four-year university. Coach Chad McGuire says, "Sean has started every game for us this year providing quiet leadership. He works hard every day in practice and during games, leading by example. Sean is well liked by his teammates, coaches, and faculty at MHS."

 

DECEMBER 2010

Nathan Park, 3.775 GPA
Nathan Park dominates the nominations for Wrestling. He has a winning record (8-3) and placed 3rd at a varsity tournament.  He has an excellent GPA and is also the captain of the wrestling team. Nathan enjoys being a part of the Wrestling team, welcomes the hard work and notes how much that helps him be a better person. Nathan also played Tennis for MHS. Off campus Nathan spends his time as a volunteer with a youth church camp. He'll be majoring in Math at the University of Washington and then plans to go on to medical school.              

Michaela O’Neill, 3.358 GPA
Michaela O’Neill is a tremendous leader of the Lady Mavs basketball program and has shown real resilience in bouncing back from some health issues. She is the glue that holds the team together both on and off the court. Michaela loves sports at MHS because it has afforded her the opportunity to meet so many new people, on and off the court. On campus she is part of the MHS yearbook team and helps out when she can with other activities. Michaela is very involved with her volunteer work at St. Luke Parish and on Sundays she volunteers at PAWS. Michaela was accepted to WSU and will be enrolled in the Hospitality Management Program.

 

NOVEMBER 2010

Tessa Helber, Volleyball, 3.584 GPA
Tessa has been a part of the volleyball program for four years. She has been on varsity for two years and is a captain for the 2010 season. Tessa is a hard worker in practice and is always striving to improve. Her position is important in that she needs be a strong, aggressive defensive player and is also a back up to our setter. She has proven to be a very consistent player - one that her teammates can depend on. Tessa remains positive and encouraging in all situations, is a very good leader to her teammates and often adds some comic relief. In addition to being Captain of the Volleyball team and an important contributor, Tessa also plays Varsity Tennis for MHS. Off the courts, Tessa in on the yearbook staff, a member of Link Crew, National Honor Society and is taking many AP/Honors Courses.  As if that is not enough, she volunteers her summers and other spare time as a camp counselor and part of the coaching staff for Run to Win. Tessa feels that sports are a key opportunity to bond with teammates, develop trust in others and learn ethics that can be applied on and off the field. Tessa is hoping to end her dynamic high school career with plans to attend a four-year university where she may study Mass Communications. Tessa is looking at the University of Washington, University of Portland and SC in Santa Clara. 

Matt Crichlow, Cross Country, 3.53 GPA
Coach Marv notes that Matt dedicated himself to training in the off season and has stepped way out in front finishing in the top 5 of every race so far this year. In both league and big Saturday invites Matt has definitely become one of the top runners in Wesco/Northwest 3A.  He is also Team Captain and an inspiration to others, with both humor and inspiration. Matt was a member of Link Crew this year, in addition to prepping for his best running year ever. Matt values his independent performance but also appreciates the team aspect of Cross Country. He feels that he has learned how important a strong work ethic is in all that he does and will do. Matt is hoping to run Cross Country for a four-year University and is currently looking at Gonzaga and the University of San Francisco. 

OCTOBER 2010

Kiersten Olsen, Cheer, 3.84 GPA
Kiersten is a multi-talented student scholar athlete known for her positive attitude, maturity and long-standing involvement in MHS activities. A natural leader, Kiersten uses her leadership skills as Co-Captain of the Cheer Squad and Editor in Chief of the Yearbook, two of her many long-standing school activities. While at Meadowdale Kiersten has also enjoyed participating in Student Council, Link Crew and competing on the girls’ volleyball and basketball teams. Outside of school this busy senior works at Pump It Up and is active with Young Life. She is also a Sno-King assistant youth sports coach. Following graduation, Kiersten plans to attend a four-year university to study journalism or public relations.

Alex Casper, Tennis, 3.19 GPA
Alex is an accomplished four-year varsity tennis team player who ended the regular season undefeated with a 16-0 singles record. Alex’s hard work and drive to play his best helped him capture the NW District 3A Singles title and a trip to the state tournament. Alex is also the recipient of the Everett Herald Athlete of The Week Award (twice this year) and is a Team Captain (junior and senior year). Alex loves tennis and feels he has benefited from the game in many ways including learning responsibility and gentlemanly behavior, building a strong character and the opportunity to make friends. A two-sport athlete, Alex will be playing his final season this year on the Mavs basketball team. Alex is excited about the future and his plans to play competitive tennis on the collegiate level while earning a business degree.

SEPTEMBER 2010

Megan Montzingo, Volleyball, 3.9 GPA
Megan Montzingo is an active leader in her youth group, a member of National Honor Society and is in the process of joining the Leo Club. Megan loves the good friendships and team modeling that comes from being on the volleyball team and looks forward daily to workouts with both Varsity and JV. Megan has the travel bug and hopes to participate in a study abroad program while attending a four-year university. Coach's comments:  "Megan missed her crucial junior year in volleyball due to her mission trip to Thailand with her family. But she has come back with strong work ethic in her practice and a positive attitude. Her hard work has brought her off of the bench and landed her in a key role as a Libero – defensive specialist. She always has a smile and her teammates enjoy her participation."

 

Scott Bohmke, Tennis, 3.93 GPA
Scott Bohmke is a very busy young man off the tennis court as well. Scott is a member of the Mock Trial Team, MHS Newspaper Sports Editor and he tutors fifth graders through his youth and church group. Scott, who also plays tennis outside of MHS, highly values his years here at Meadowdale where he has learned to take a leadership role - a role he had to conquer shyness for and now loves. Scott will play tennis in his secondary education and is looking seriously at Willamette University in Oregon where he plans to study Economics. Coach's comments:  "I cannot say enough about our Team Captain. Scott is 11-1 in doubles and has 14 straight wins out of 15 matches this year. Scott possesses that unique blend of solid character, quiet confidence and leadership skills. Scott is definitely a role model to other tennis players on the team."
