Football: Fri. Oct. 3rd - Snohomish:
Well, if you haven't heard of Glacier Peak High School, the new school in
Snohomish, you should now. The Mavs literally ran them into the ground Friday
night, led by the running of Naji Moore-Taylor, 34 - 21. Naji racked up 266
yards and five touchdowns, four coming in the second half. Give a huge credit to
the offensive line who opened up huge holes for Naji to run through.
The Mavs scored on the very first possession of the game. The Glacier Peak
Grizzlies tied the score late in the quarter. The second half was marked by both
team marching up and down the field, but no one scored. In the third quarter the
teams exchanged scores, tied 14-14, then the Mavs offensive started really
clicking. They scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter alone. In the
fourth quarter, both teams scored again, the MAVS scoring late with just two
minutes remaining in the game, wrapping up the game. With just seconds left on
the clock Nasser Kyobe intercepted a Grizzly pass and returned it to the 4 yard
line. Coach Stewart proved the class guy he is, again, and chose to take a knee
to end the game. Final Score: Mavs 34 - Grizzlies 21.
The Mavs improved to 3-1 overall, and next
week return to Edmonds Stadium to take on Shorecrest.
Girls Soccer: Wed. Oct 1st -
Everett: The girls soccer team took on Jackson in a very close match,
winning 2-1. Both teams are considered the "teams to beat" in the WESCO South,
in their respective divisions (Jackson is 4A and we are 3A). The first part of
the match was a defensive dual and looked to be a long afternoon. However, the
MAVS got very tough on defensive, like someone turned on a switch. Then Julia
Fjortoft took a nice pass from Maddi Null down the left side, made a nice cut to
the goal and scored. A few minutes later Kaeli Eberth sprinted down the right
side of the field, like she was shot out of a cannon, and drilled a hard shot in
the far side of the net. The Mavs took a 2-0 lead.
It looked like Jackson would come right back, as they had a few scoring
opportunities, but could not find the net. However in the second half Jackson
did find the net, tightening up the score 2 - 1. Jackson had a number of scoring
opportunities late in the game, but goalie Tanya Zickafoose kept turning them
away. She made two very key saves in the few minutes of the game, including a
hard shot from almost point blank range.
It was a big win for the MAVS, who only have 2 Seniors on this years squad.
Great game ladies!
Boys Tennis: Tues. Sept 30th, at MHS:
The boys tennis team dismantled Lynnwood 6-1 led by Scott Bohmke, Alex Casper
and Jeff Lee in singles. In the doubles matches the combinations of
Zack Jace-Moss Sherrill, Drew Gourlie-Nathan Shields, and
Christopher Johnson-Andrew Olsen proved too much for Lynnwood. The team improved
their record to 5-4 on the season.
